THE FOLLOWER

you taught me the words
I already knew
the public sensations
I had already felt

minimised by your prideful heart
I was the tiny flea with a golden spark
that hides and creeps within your space
your careless, guideless, invisible grace

I studied your nonchalance in photographs
like a betting man prowling the stables
for his horse of choice
to win, to fail

I’ll break it all down for you
through a personalised reading
of your own work and lifestyle

to the stock
through bars
to the vault
only you can dislodge

  1. Such great imagery!
I had to read it again...
    I love this stanza best:

    "minimised by your prideful heart
I was the tiny flea with a golden spark
that hides and creeps within your space
    your careless, guideless, invisible grace"

  3. I imagined an admirer, a "lurker," totally engaged in the online life of another, unbeknownst to the subject.

  4. Anyone who can write "a tiny flea with a golden spark" is much more than a tiny flea!!!! Loved it.

  5. uncannily enough, both me and you seem to be talking about certain similar experiences, though in different keys. I also love the alterations in meter, rhythm and pace that is present here, especially the interweaving of rhymed lines.

  6. There are horses you should follow but not bet on : ) The line between nonchalance and indifference is very narrow.

  7. I can't even find my words to describe how wonderful I think this poem is. Aside from the slight stalker-ish vibe, this is just lovely.

  8. Reeling from a love that was taken away against the will, being forced to watch the life of the one that is loved unfold with yearning but with no chance of that love ever being rekindled?

    Great poem.
